Gas leaked out into the area while filling

I was at Costco filling up on gas.

When it reached full, the gas pump stopped. But even before I removed the nozzle a whole bunch of gas appeared outside in the plastic area!

I'm not sure how I could've pumped gas differently to have prevented that since there's only one way for the nozzle to go in.

Has anyone else seen something like this?
